5 Different Methods To Install Wordpress Plugin

Installing wordpress plugin is a must when it comes to starting a blog with wordpress. At least you need one plugin that is akismet. I have no idea if there is another plugin function like akismet.

In this blog post, I will cover how to install wordpress plugin in 5 different methods. The easiest way that is by searching and install plugin via the admin panel(Method 1).

If you have a plugin on your local computer, then you can upload and install it after login to your wordpress blog admin panel(Method 2).

Another way to upload the plugin to your root domain is using Cpanel. It is the most control panel used by many hosting providers. After uploading the plugin to your root domain using cpanel, then install it via the admin panel(Method 3).

If you do want to use cpanel to upload wordpress plugin, an alternative way is to use SFTP. SFTP means secure file transfer protocol. This software is available for windows pc, linux pc and mac. You can upload the plugin using sftp, then install it via the admin panel(Method 4).

The last method includes in this post is using wp-cli. It is small software that you can install on your local computer or your VPS hosting. You can search, install and uninstall wordpress plugin using wp-cli(Method 5).

I assume you have installed wordpress on your live hosting before start the tutorial.

This method is the easiest way to install and activate wordpress plugin, even your grandma can do that. Make sure that you are connected to the wordpress plugins repository securely.

If the connection to the wordpress plugins repository cannot be established, you must contact your hosting administrator to fix this problem.

Let's start step by step on how to do this method 1.

1) Login to your wordpress admin panel with user and password you have created.

2) Find the plugins section in the left corner. After you find it, click on it.

3) Click on add new.

4) For this tutorial, We will try to install and activate Yoast SEO Plugin.

5) Click on Popular.

6) Click on install now.

7) Click activate to start using the plugin.

2. Upload and install plugin via the admin panel

The second method to install wordpress plugin is by uploading the plugin to your blog and then you can install it.

Here is the step by step in detail.

1) Login to your wordpress admin panel with user and password you have created

2) Click on plugins that you can find it at the left corner inside in the admin panel

3) Click on add new

4) Click on "Upload Plugin"

5) Click on browse

6) Find the plugin you need to install. Your plugin should be in .zip format. If not, contact your plugin provider so that you can have it in .zip format.

7) Click on install

3. Upload plugin via cpanel then install via the admin panel

Cpanel is the most popular control panel to manage both shared hosting and VPS hosting. By using it, you can upload the file, install wordpress with ease, add a domain, and much more.

In the method 2, we upload the wordpress plugin via admin panel. Alternately, you can do this via cpanel too. You do this usually because you have plugin not in .zip format. When you try to .zip it, you can not install it via admin panel. So this is the solution.

1) Login to your cpanel with username and password that your hosting provider has created for you. To do this, open browser and type yourdomain.com/cpanel. Put the username and the password in the given field, then click on login

2) Click on file manager

3) Go to your root domain

4) Navigate to wp-content/plugins

5) Click on upload

6) Extract the plugin. Alternately, you can also extract the plugin on your local computer then upload the plugin folder

7) Login to your admin panel

8) Find the plugin in the section plugin

9) Click activate

4. SFTP

There are many software called SFTP that can be used to transfer the file from a local computer to your hosting. This free software is easy to use. In this post, I am going to show you how to use WinSCP for windows.

WinSCP is only available for windows user. If you are using other than windows pc, then you can use FileZilla.

To transfer the file from a local computer to your hosting using WinSCP here is step by step guide.

1) Open WinSCP

2) Place user of the sftp in the hostname field. The default port is 22. If you do not change the port number, then leave it by default

3) Type the password of the sftp in the password field

4) Hit login button

5) Copy your file folder of the wordpress plugin to the /rootdomain/wp-content/plugins/. You can upload the wordpress plugin in .zip format too. Then you extract it.

6) Login to your admin panel of the wordpress blog

7) Activate it

How To Install Wordpress Plugin

Using GIT

For windows user, you can use sftp command line to transfer the file from local computer to your hosting. Step by step below explains how to do it.

1) Download GIT software from git-scm.com

2) Open the folder where you want to upload the plugin

3) Right-click then click on Git Bash Here

4) Connect to your hosting

sftp user@ipaddress

5) Transfer the plugin

put name-of-the-plugin /rootdomain/wp-content/plugins/

6) Activate plugin via dashboard

SFTP on Ubuntu PC

If you are using ubuntu PC, you do need git installed to use SFTP. To do SFTP, follow these step by step.

1) Open terminal

2) Connect to your hosting

sftp user@ipaddress

3) Transfer the plugin

put name-of-the-plugin /rootdomain/wp-content/plugins/

4) Activate plugin via dashboard

Wp-cli

Wp-cli is command line interface for wordpress. It is light software that can be used to manage wordpress on VPS hosting. Mostly, many bloggers who are using unmanaged VPS are using wp-cli.

To use wp-cli, you have to install wp-cli first. To do this, follow these step by step.

1) Login to your VPS via ssh

2) Download wp-cli.

curl -O https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wp-cli/builds/gh-pages/phar/wp-cli.phar

3) Make it executable

chmod +x wp-cli.phar

4) Check that wp-cli is working properly

php wp-cli.phar --info

5) Move wp-cli to bin folder

sudo mv wp-cli.phar /usr/local/bin/wp

6) Again, check if wp-cli is working properly

wp --info

Next step is to install wordpress plugin

7) Search the wordpress plugin

wp plugin search name of the plugin --path=/rootdomain/

wp plugin search yoast seo --path=/rootdomain/

8) If you know the name of the wordpress plugin, you can install it using this command line below. For this example, I am going to install bbpress Plugin. Type this command.

wp plugin install name of the plugin --path=/rootdomain/

wp plugin install bbpress --path=/rootdomain/
